Village in Evia evacuated as Pissonas fire rages out of control; 5th fire in Malakasa
The village of Afrati in Evia was evacuated and residents transferred to safety on Friday afternoon, when flames from a wildfire that started in Pissonas came within 20 metres of their homes. According to authorities, the fire continues to blaze out of control.
The local mayor warned that the situation was crucial since the fire was burning on a very big front about 600 metres from the village.
Very strong winds are blowing in the area, covering the area in smoke and spreading panic in local residents.
Fire-fight forces on foot are trying to create a protective zone around Afrati but the flames are particularly high. They are assisted by fire-fighting forces sent from areas throughout central Greece, volunteers and municipality vehicles, as well as fire-fighting aircraft.
In the meantime, a fifth fire was reported in the Attica region of Malakasa, in the Milesi region between Malakasa and Oropos. The fire brigade does not yet have a clear picture of the situation in the area.
