Greek trade deficit shrank by 63.1 pct in July as the imposition of capital controls significantly reduced imports (-32 pct) in the month, while the country’s trade deficit shrank by 19.5 pct in the January-July period, compared with the same period last year.

Hellenic Statistical Authority in a monthly report on the country’s merchandise trade released on Monday said that the value of import-arrivals totaled 3.024 billion euros in July, from 4.449 billlion in July 2014, a decline of 32 pct (excluding oil products the value of imports fell by 22.6 pct). The value of export-deliveries totaled 2.309 billion euros, from 2.51 billion euros last year, a decline of 8.0 pct (excluding oil products the value of exports grew by 7.0 pct.

The country’s trade deficit was 714.9 million euros in July, from 1.939 billion last year, a decline of 63.1 pct (excluding oil products the trade deficit shrank by 56.3 pct). In the January-July period, the value of import-arrivals totaled 25.303 billion euros, from 28.149 billion last year, a decline of 10.1 pct (excluding oil products the value of imports shrank by 1.4 pct). The value of exports totaled 15.325 billion euros in the seven-month period, from 15.754 billion euros in 2014, a decline of 2.7 pct (excluding oil products the value of exports grew 12.8 pct. The trade deficit totaled 9.978 billion euros in the January-July period, from 12.395 billion euros last year (a decline of 19.5 pct), while excluding oil products it fell by 15.6 pct.
