The problems facing the small and medium-sized businesses are not only due to the capital controls but also to the austerity programs that were implemented in the last five years, Popular Unity said in a statement on Monday.

“The economic strangulation of SME’s, the dramatic decline in popular incomes and the sinking of the Greek economy are not only due to the capital controls, but are mainly the fruit of the memorandums that were implemented in the last five years,” the party said in response to a report published by the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE), which recorded a 30 pct drop in commercial activity during the summer sales period.
