The need for national consensus at this crucial period for Greece underlined New Democracy (ND) leader Evangelos Meimarakis in his interview to Sunday newspaper Proto Thema and expressed his certainty that ND will be first in the general elections.

"Our ambition is to be the first party. We claim the first place again and I believe that the first place belongs to ND" said Meimarakis who did not rule out the possibility of a post-election cooperation with SYRIZA noting that it takes two for tango.

In this context he underlined that "at the moment we come first there can be a broader cooperation of the political forces of the European front for a four-year government based on a national plan for economic and social restoration.

Moreover, Meimarakis charged SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras that "he leads the country to disaster" and reiterated that the elections may cost to the country and not to ND.
