FinMin Varoufakis: democracy and a common currency can co-exist
The referendum gives hope to Europe [to realise] that democracy and a common currency can co-exist, Greece's Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Sunday, after exercising his right to vote in the country's referendum.
In recent years, the massive failures of the Eurogroup had led to ultimatums in which the Greek people had no say, Varoufakis said. After five years of such mistakes and failures, the people were finally getting an opportunity to state their opinion of the latest ultimatum issued by the Eurogroup, the institutions and Greece's partners, he added.
"It is a sacred moment. A moment of hope for all of Europe. It gives hope to Europe that a common currency and democracy can co-exist and do co-exist," he said.
