Greek finance ministry sources on Friday described comments made by Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem for Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, as “confrontational”, saying they are attributed to his efforts to be re-elected in his position.

The sources said that the EU official appears to not understand that his role as Eurogroup president is to bridge differences and minimize tensions. On the contrary, since Dijsselbloem’s first visit to Varoufakis’ office, the Dutch minister presented the Greek minister with a dilemma: to either accept the memorandum or the programme will collapse.

And today, they add, Dijsselbloem is counting on division and bad relations with Greece, hoping to earn points in the presidential race. “The Eurozone deserves something better,” the sources concluded.

Earlier, the head of the Eurogroup dismissed as “completely incorrect” Varoufakis’ claims that a deal with Greece’s lenders is imminent. Dijsselbloem said that whatever the result of the vote, the country is facing a difficult future and will have to adopt tough austerity measures.

He added that any politician who says that austerity measures won’t be needed in case of a ‘no’ vote is simply mocking his people.
