European Commission VP Timmermans says Greece is not a failed state
Greece is not the failed state of the European Union, First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans said in an interview with Austrian public radio on Thursday, adding that efforts have to be made to help the Greek people and find a solution.
He said the solution tabled by the European Commission is clear and he’s of the impression that “we were close to a solution, but it wasn’t achieved and [now] we’ll have to negotiate, but realistically; because one cannot say ‘No’, refuse to talk and believe that creditors will agree”.
Timmermans said the institutions made clear proposals and it is now up to the Greek government to react and not just say ‘No’. “However, we haven’t seen anything so far; now we cannot do anything and we’ll have to wait to see what the referendum will bring on Sunday.”
