Government council on social policy aims at restructuring the welfare state
The main points of the government’s plan for the first six months of 2016 and the ways to implement them were discussed at the meeting of the government council on social policy on Tuesday, the government Vice-Presidency announced.

The meeting also discussed the imminent social security and pension reforms, including topics such as the national pension, the proposal for higher social contributions and the unification of social security funds.

The council’s aim, the announcement said, is to lay the foundations for a full restructuring of the welfare state and added that other policies implemented on social solidarity, on fighting the humanitarian crisis, on employment, health, education and culture are part of an overall strategy to respond to the pressing social needs in the country.

The council was chaired by Government Vice-President Yiannis Dragasakis and attended by the leadership of the Labour and Health ministries, as well as by Education Minister Nikos Filis and Culture and Sports Minister Aristidis Baltas.
