Βelgian gas pipeline operator Fluxys informed Environment and Energy Minister Panos Skourletis it is interested in buying a stake in Greek gas grid operator DESFA from SOCAR, after the completion of the sale of 66 pct to the Azeri state energy firm, during a meeting in Brussels on Friday.

The meeting was also attended by the Belgian Ambassador to Greece, Luc Liebaut.

The sale to SOCAR has been delayed as is has run into opposition from the European Commission’s competition directorate. All sides involved believe the matter could be resolved is some of the stocks are sold to a European company.

Representatives of the company – in which the Belgium State holds a significant stake – also noted the company’s extensive experience in managing natural gas networks in many European countries.

On his side, the minister noted the positive prospects of the Greek gas market which is growing and added that the completion of a series of energy projects which under way, will create a new era in the energy field and strengthen the role of Greece as an energy hub.
