Crete most vulnerable to climate change flooding in Greece, studies show
The island of Crete and especially the coastal region to the north are expected to be among areas in Greece that will be hardest hit by climate change and flooding resulting from extreme wave action in coming years, according to the latest scientific reports presented at a seminar in Thessaloniki on Friday.
"Due to the northerly winds, we will have the most problems on Crete, in the northern section of Crete and also in the Peloponnese, though there will be differences in all areas where we have seen problems with flooding and erosion," said Thessaloniki University Civil Engineering Professor Panagiotis Prinos, who was head of a study on the impact of climate change on Greek seas and coastlines, including coastal infrastructure, funded by the Thales European research programme.
He said the phenomena will start to be apparent by 2050 and up to the end of the current century.
The study showed a rise in extreme events and floods linked to the wave climate but not major disasters or a significant change in average sea levels in Greece.
