Securing funds for the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects as well as the planning for the financing of new projects were discussed in a meeting between Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Christos Spirtzis with European Investment Bank (EIB) President Werner Hoyer on Tuesday.

After the meeting, Spirtzis said the majority of projects funded by the current National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), which expires at the end of this year, must be completed by March 2017 to avoid losing funds and so as to transfer as few projects as possible into the new one program.

The projects that must be completed are the motorways and the metro and rail extensions. Concerning Thessaloniki metro, its funding has been extended to March 2020.

Commenting on the meeting, Hoyer noted that the bank remained in Greece during the crisis and plans to remain after the crisis, while he said he is optimistic after his meeting at the ministry. “It’s incredible how many projects will soon be concluded in Greece,” he said adding there has been big progress in the motorways, especially in Moreas.

“What is important now is to make a list of priorities, like the minister suggested,” he said.
