Greece's shipping ministry on Monday invited shipping companies to submit offers for the charter of two ships for transporting migrants and refugees from islands in the eastern Aegean.

Caretaker Alternate Minister for Shipping and Tourism Christos Zois sent a notification to the passenger shippers' union SEEN, saying that due to the sudden and mass influx of refugees and migrants to the islands, it was considered necessary for at least two ships to be made available to transport them. He invited SEEN members to submit offers fulfilling the requirements within 24 hours.

The catamaran 'Tera Jet' and the passenger ferry 'Eleftherios Venizelos' have already been chartered for this use by services involving in managing migration flows.
