ND leader Meimarakis: ‘We cannot resort to elections every once and a while’

Main opposition leader Vangelis Meimarakis said on Wednesday that a country cannot hold elections every so often noting that this is the reason why the upcoming electoral battle on September 20 is very important.

Speaking after meeting with local officials in the town of Neapoli in the prefecture of Lasithi, western Crete, he urged Greeks to give a confidence vote and not a protest or a punitive vote which, in the last elections, cost the country about 90 billion euros.

Meimarakis, who kicked off his election campaign with a two-day visit on the island, met with prefecture officials and members of the local business community who outlined their problems facing the region, such as lack of infrastructure in health, unemployment and hurdles in tourism.

Discussing the issues, the head of New Democracy said the next five years will be crucial for the country adding that people need to build trust and a basic direction to follow.

He also blamed SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras for stopping the path that the previous government had charted and stressed that when people head to the polls they should keep in mind the actions of the seven-month governance of SYRIZA and ANEL.
