A close aide of former Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras, the lawyer Stavros Papastavrou, is expected to testify as a suspect on Wednesday in an ongoing investigation concerning the HSBC Swiss bank accounts and sums recorded in the so-called 'Lagarde list'.

Papastavrou and his mother, who is also listed as one of the account holders, along with Papastavrou's now deceased father, will be asked to explain how they gained possession of some 5.5 million euros held in the account. The charges against them include those of tax evasion and money laundering.

The lawyer has so far asserted that the money in the account was not his own but that of businessman Sabi Mioni, and that he acted as the account's administrator.

Greek authorities are also investigating Mioni in connection with the case and have asked for documents giving Papastavrou power of attorney and other evidence in support of the lawyer's claims.
