SYRIZA MP and former minister Panagiotis Lafazanis’ call for the creation of “a social and political movement” which will oppose the bailout debated in parliament on Thursday finalizes his long foregone decision to part ways with the government and SYRIZA even before the scheduled party congress, government sources said on Thursday.

“The decision of Panagiotis Lafazanis to announce today, in concurrence with actors of the fragmented extra-parliamentary Left, the model of a new political entity, finalizes a long foregone decision to separate his path from the government and SYRIZA, even before the jointly scheduled extraordinary [party] congress,” the sources said.

The same sources noted that as Lafazanis justifies his open action to form a new party by citing SYRIZA’s pre-election commitments and the outcome of the recent referendum, “we will have to remind all that a coordinated return to the drachma - which is set as a central policy objective – which means having a drachma and a memorandum, may be a position adopted by [German Finance Minister] Wolfgang Schaeuble, but it was never SYRIZA’s pre-election pledge.”

Commenting on the referendum, the sources also noted that the 62 pct result in favour of the ‘No’ vote was not in any way a mandate to exit the euro or return to the national currency.
