Greece had arrested an extradited terror suspect to Belgium in January

The man proved not to be the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was sentenced by Belgian authorities in absentia for recruiting for Islamic State in Syria earlier this year, but was a person of interest extradited to Belgium on the basis of a European arrest warrant on January 28.

The Hellenic Parliament was informed of the arrest in response to a question posed by Golden Dawn MP Yiannis Lagos on January 16.

In his reply with a document sent to Parliament on March 13, Voutsis said the ministry had no information pointing to suspicious extremist activities or Islamist cells placing law and order and national security at risk in Greece. He conceded the possibility, however, that the country's position might allow terrorists to use the illegal migrant trafficking networks to reach the Middle East fronts or return from them to Europe.

He noted that, for this reason, Greek authorities were on constant alert to trace possible suspicious activities, carrying out constant checks at the borders and within the country.
