Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Amanatidis arrived in Paris to represent Greece at the 38th General Conference of UNESCO.

The General Conference, which is held every two years, aims at the establishment of the "road map" of the organization for the fulfillment of the targets adopted at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The fulfillment of the "Sustainable Development Goals", as adopted in New York last September, by 2030 is the topic of this year's 38th conference, which began on Wednesday and will last until November 18.

The Greek Deputy Foreign Minister will address the plenary on Thursday, at 18:00.

Delegations from 195 member states and 10 more countries participate in the conference. The Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, declaring the opening of the conference, stressed the renewed commitment to the fundamental principles of the organization, 70 years after its foundation: "UNESCO is the outcome of the principles of peace and development. But in order for these principles to be sustainable, they should become part of the people themselves."

During the conference, the participants among others will examine policies and programmes, they will make a review of the achievements, and they will review the 2016-2017 budget.
