Lesvos declares three days of mourning for drowned refugees
The island of Lesvos declared on Tuesday three days of mourning in memory of the hundreds of refugees who have lost their lives trying to cross into Greece and Europe and alert the world to the drama unfolding on the country's shores.

“Wanting to awaken the European and world community which is watching unable to provide a solution to this humanitarian crisis, the municipality of Lesvos declares three days of mourning in memory of the victims of this heinous crime being committed daily from ruthless traffickers,” the municipality announced.

Local authorities also urged islanders to participate in a prayer service for all the refugees who perished at sea which will be conducted by the Metropolitan of Lesvos and representatives of all Churches at the village of Epano Skala, at 17.00 (local time).

The municipality says the service constitutes a symbolic gesture to show the world that regardless of religion and country of origin “we all stand united against the criminals who sent daily to their deaths women and children”.

“Let’s unite our forces in a silent protest rally against modern traffickers and in favour of intervention to fight the murderous actions,” it added.
