Athens Mayor complains of continued refugee problem in call to PM, migration minister
Police were continuing to direct refugees arriving in Athens to the city's centre, even though reception and hospitality facilities at the muncipality's site in Elaionas had been up and running for 20 days now, Athens Mayor George Kaminis complained on Tuesday in a call to caretaker Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou and Alternate Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas.
Kaminis called for the immediate implementation of the agreements between the caretaker government and Athens municipality for refugees, such as the operation of new reception and hospitality centres, provision of decent living conditions for refugees and protecting normality of daily life for residents in the capital.
Despite the exemplary operation of the Elaionas site, Kaminis said, refugees were still led in their hundreds to central squares in the city, creating stifling conditions, such as the 2,000-odd refugees gathered in Athens' Victoria Square on Monday night.
