The days of single-party governments and "saviours" that solved the problems single-handedly were over, main opposition New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis said on Friday, while on tour in the prefectures of Viotia and Evia.

Meimarakis had a series of meetings with mayors and local officials in the area, saying his aim was to highlight the need for cooperation on an institutional level, in order to arrive at the best possible solutions.

"The complexity of the problems demands that the political forces are able to discuss, reach an understanding and have the necessary consensus and moderation to find solutions," he said.

He said that ND would not seek to "outbid" the competition with pre-election promises or make pledges that could not be carried out in the run-up to these elections.

"ND does make a commitment, however, to work with all democrats that have a point of view, regardless of how they voted and what they believe, in order to find solutions. So that the citizens can once more regain their faith in the political system as a whole," he added.
