Main opposition leader accused former prime minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday of behaving in an authoritarian way by not allowing people enough time to be properly informed about the contents of the third bailout which was voted by his resigned government.

"The Constitution is not a rubber band. We must implement the rules,” Vangelis Meimarakis told private TV station Alpha in his first election interview, adding that Tsipras failed to explain to the people why the country is heading to elections.

The leader of New Democracy (ND) criticized the former premier for being “unrepentant” as he didn’t manage to provide a good explanation for calling snap elections. “Finding him was Alpha’s success,” he added, alluding to previous accusations that Tsipras was hiding.

Talking about the upcoming elections, Meimarakis noted that people should have had the time to discuss the issues on which they are called to decide upon, adding that “they have not been informed on the bailout which will change their lives for a very long time.”

Continuing his criticism of Tsipras, he said the real reason Greeks are being rushing to elections is to prevent them from receiving the tax slips and the new installments of the property tax they’ll be required to pay this year.
