New Democracy rejects proposal for establishment of European front
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) shot down statements by party members on Thursday who called for the need to form a European front by joining forces with other parties, describing them as “misguided”.
Party sources said this is not allowed by the electoral law and that the issue was discussed “exhaustively” last year when it was decided that “the electoral law for national elections expressly prohibits coalitions from being granted the 50-seat bonus, unlike the European elections, where proportional representation is used and no bonus applies.”
The same sources also noted that the issue had been discussed with other parties of the European front which rejected the idea of forming a coalition party.
