Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras congratulated Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Minister Panos Skourletis on Wednesday on his efforts to protect the environment following the latter’s decision to temporarily suspend the licenses of Canadian-owned mining company Eldorado Gold, arguing it violated the terms of its technical studies.

Tsipras was briefed by the minister on the developments on the company’s work in the area of Skouries, in northern Greece, after which he noted the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and public interest, government sources said.

“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” Tsipras was quoted as telling Skourletis during their meeting at Maximos Mansion, according to the sources. They also discussed the ministry’s latest actions, as well as developments on the issue of the Russian pipeline.

Tsipras and Skourletis will meet again on Monday to discuss the government’s political initiatives.
