In a first assessment of the deal struck between Greece and its Eurozone partners for a 3rd Greek bailout, main opposition New Democracy's Political Council on Monday welcomed the agreement as "necessary to avoid an absolute catastrophe," while noting that it was "much worse" than anything preceding it.

"A painful agreement was chosen, much worse than what has existed until today, in order to avoid absolute catastrophe. What happened in the last six months and what responsibilities exist are known to all. Now the priority is to preserve social cohesion, ensure financing of the banking system, start to restore the country's credibility and political stability," the meeting chaired by interim ND leader Vangelis Meimarakis concluded.

"It is time to heal wounds and repair damage. ND as a key pillar of the country's European orientation, as a force for truth, stability and prospects, contributed decisively with its stance to the effort to keep the country in Europe and the inner core of the eurozone, because this is the only path for the country and the Greek people."
