ND pledges support 'on condition that government returns with agreement'
Main opposition New Democracy will support legislation authorising the government to negotiate a new loan agreement for financial assistance to Greece from the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) but only on condition that it returned with a deal, ND Parliamentary rapporteur Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said on Friday, addressing a joint session of the four competent Parliamentary committees.
"We ask for one and only clear change to the document; an express commitment that the prime minister will not return after Sunday without bringing an agreement that keeps Greece in Europe and the euro," he said.
It was up to the government to decide on the mix of measures that must be adopted but "on no account to we authorise you to go to a rift or not lead to an agreement. Because, unfortunately, this is the dilemma that your fruitless and criminal for the economy and the country's standing negotiation has brought us before," he added, noting that Greece was now called to adopt extremely difficult and harsh measures "that we would not have had to take a few months ago".
