Sailboat carrying migrants/refugees sinks in Aegean, 17 missing
At least 17 people are considered missing after a sailboat carrying 33 to 37 migrants and/or refugees sank in the sea between the Aegean islands of Agathonissi and Farmakonissi on Tuesday afternoon, authorities reported.
The Greek coast guard and Turkish authorities have launched a rescue operation and have so far rescued 16 people that were on the sunken vessel. Ten were picked up by a Turkish patrol boat and six by a Greek Super-Puma rescue helicopter. Two Greek coast guard vessels and a Greek Navy ship are also participating in the search-and-rescue effort, which is continuing.
