Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides on Friday agreed that the guarantor powers should withdraw from Cyprus so that the island republic becomes a single, bi-communal federation with full rights, independence and integrity, which will operate as an EU member-state without 'guardians'.

The two ministers had a two-hour meeting at the foreign ministry in Athens, which later also included large delegations from both countries. Afterwards, they expressed confidence that negotiations on the Cyprus issue will be relaunched but also concern about instability in Turkey, following the result of the Turkish elections.

They discussed issues concerning the broader region, including the Middle East, relations between the EU and Turkey, the Balkans and promoting trilateral cooperation with Egypt and Israel.

Emphasis was also given to the issue of migration, with both sides fully supporting the proposals put forward by European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos for a fair distribution of the burden between EU member-states.

Kotzias stressed that the EU must handle the issue with a spirit of reasonableness and humanity, with security and stability in the region as a guideline.
