ND leader says confident party elections will run smoothly on Sunday
New Democracy (ND) interim leader Yiannis Plakiotakis expressed on Friday his certitude that the elections for new party leader on Sunday (Dec. 20) will be successful and urged members and friends of the party to vote.

The party was forced to cancel its first elections on Nov. 22 due to major technical problems and drawing fierce criticism from members and candidates alike.

ND’s electoral committee performed a mock vote in real conditions to test the system on which the elections will be conducted.

“With full awareness of my responsibilities, I assumed leadership to ensure the smooth conduct of the party election. All this time we managed to exercise tough and effective opposition, responded to the President’s call for a meeting of the council of political leaders and represented ND at the meeting of the EPP,” Pkakiotakis said. “My concern was it to work to create consensus and unity.”

The candidates for ND’s leadership are Evangelos Meimarakis, Adonis Georgiadis, Kyriakos Mitstotakis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas.
